(Seoul, Nov. 24, 2022 /Upstage) Upstage, Korea’s leading AI startup, met with the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada, François-Philippe Champagne and paved it way to establish a footprint in the global AI market.
On 24 November, Upstage ( www.upstage.ai ) announced that its CEO Sung Kim attended the Korea-Canada Business Roundtable event hosted by Korea International Trade Association (KITA) and spoke on behalf of the nation’s AI industries about ways to promote mutual growth between the two countries and explored opportunities for global business expansion.
Minister Champagne, who visited Korea on the eve of the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, was present at the event as chief guest. 17 Korean companies from core industries, including energy, bio, EV, aerospace and AI, participated in the event, along with six Canadian companies and the delegation of Canadian government, including Electra Battery Materials and Nano One Materials Corp., discussing ways to strengthen strategic partnership.
Canada is an AI powerhouse which ranks higher than Korea in the global competitiveness indices. The nation is widely recognized as a go-to destination for the AI investment with its unique concoction of best minds and technologies, most notably Professor Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto, a prominent figure in deep learning. Upstage is poised to create a bridgehead for the global expansion by tapping into the Canadian AI market, leveraging its world-class, high-tech technologies.
During the event, particular attention was paid to Upstage for being the only startup on the list of otherwise big-name companies. The presence of a two-year-old startup among the nation’s biggest economic bellwethers, including Samsung, Hyundai, Hanwha, POSCO and KaKao, testified Upstage’s industry-leading technologies to the global audience.
Earlier, Upstage demonstrated its technological prowess by publishing a number of papers at top-tier AI conferences and journals, including NeurlPS, AAAI, ACL and EMNLP, while sweeping almost a dozen gold medals from Kaggle competitions, outnumbering other Korean companies. In addition, the company ranked first among Korean companies in the annual challenge held by the ACM Recommender Systems conference (RecSys), premier international forum of AI recommender systems, demonstrating its competitiveness on a par with global tech giants such as Intel, Huawei and Nvidia.
Upstage CEO Sung Kim said, “It was a privilege to have been invited to this special occasion as the only startup company to discuss future collaborations with Canada, a global leader in the AI landscape,” adding “Upstage will take the lead in providing advanced AI solutions tailored to the needs of global corporate clients, leveraging the nation’s best AI technology.”
Meanwhile, Upstage plans to launch a no-code, low-code “Upstage AI Pack” at the end of this year to provide customized AI solutions tailored to client’s unique business needs. The package includes optical character recognition (OCR) technology that can extract and exploit desired information from images, recommender systems that assess customer information and service features, as well as natural language processing (NLP) that enables an intelligible semantic search. The Upstage AI Pack can help support businesses with data processing, AI modeling, and indicator management, while providing regular software updates to ensure up-to-date AI technologies are always available at disposal.
