UPSTAGE BEGINS FULL-SCALE ADVANCEMENT OF THE WORLD'S BEST LLM 'SOLAR' BY UTILIZING COMPUTING RESOURCES OF AI BUSINESS DIVISION
(Upstage = 2023/12/20) Upstage is collaborating with the Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Business Group (hereinafter referred to as the AI Business Group) to accelerate the development of the world's best large language model (LLM).
UPSTAGE (CEO KIM SEONG-HOON) ANNOUNCED ON THE 18TH THAT IT SIGNED A 'BUSINESS AGREEMENT TO PROMOTE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT AND CONVERGENCE' WITH THE AI BUSINESS GROUP. THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS HELD AN AGREEMENT CEREMONY IN THE AI BUSINESS GROUP CONFERENCE ROOM WITH KEY OFFICIALS INCLUDING UPSTAGE CTO LEE TAL-SEOK AND AI BUSINESS GROUP DIRECTOR KWAK JAE-DO IN ATTENDANCE.
IN ORDER TO DEVELOP LLM, WHICH IS THE BASIS FOR GENERATIVE AI TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS EMERGED AS A KEY NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS, SECURING GRAPHICS PROCESSING UNITS (GPUS) WORTH AT LEAST TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IS A PREREQUISITE. IN PARTICULAR, SECURING GPUS IS A HUGE BURDEN FOR STARTUPS THAT CANNOT INVEST LARGE AMOUNTS OF CAPITAL, SO NATIONAL-LEVEL INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT IS ESSENTIAL TO STRENGTHEN AI COMPETITIVENESS.
ACCORDINGLY, UPSTAGE SIGNED A BUSINESS AGREEMENT WITH THE AI BUSINESS TEAM, AND THE AI BUSINESS TEAM WILL FULLY PROVIDE ITS GPU EQUIPMENT THROUGH THE GWANGJU AI INTEGRATION COMPLEX DATA CENTER. THROUGH THIS, WE PLAN TO ACTIVELY COOPERATE IN SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF LLM DEVELOPMENT, FROM MODEL LEARNING TO DATA PREPROCESSING.
IN ADDITION, THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS WILL STRENGTHEN THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE DOMESTIC AI INDUSTRY IN VARIOUS FIELDS, SUCH AS ▲ COOPERATION IN NEW BUSINESS PLANNING AND TASK DISCOVERY ▲ COOPERATION IN COLLECTING AND UTILIZING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DATA ▲ BUILDING A NETWORK TO PROMOTE TECHNOLOGY EXCHANGE ▲ COOPERATION IN CORPORATE SUPPORT TO SPREAD ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNOLOGY. WE DECIDED TO JOIN HANDS FOR THE SAKE OF IT.
Through this agreement, Upstage will begin full-scale advancement of LLM by utilizing the GPU computing resources of the AI Business Division. Previously, Upstage released 'Solar', a pre-learning LLM with 10.7B parameters, surpassing big tech companies such as Alibaba and Mistral AI, and ranked first in the 'Hugging Face Open LLM Leaderboard'. In the future, Upstage plans to further advance solar and focus on dominating the overseas market beyond the domestic market.
UPSTAGE CTO LEE TAL-SEOK SAID, “WE ARE PLEASED TO BE ABLE TO CREATE A SMOOTH LLM DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT BY PROVIDING EXCELLENT COMPUTING RESOURCES THROUGH THIS COLLABORATION WITH THE AI BUSINESS DIVISION.” HE ADDED, “IN THE FUTURE, UPSTAGE WILL BUILD AN LLM COMPARABLE TO BIG TECH BASED ON THE WORLD’S BEST TECHNOLOGY.” “WE WILL ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT IN EARNEST,” HE SAID.
Kim Jun-ha, head of the AI business division, said, “If an environment is created where AI startups can develop LLM by utilizing AI data center computing resources, it is expected to be of great help in strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s largest AI,” and added, “Various AI convergence business cooperation models “We will create and support growth, and do our best to develop the national AI industry and expand the AI industry ecosystem,” he said.
