Upstage, Kaggle Ai Competition Gold Medal... Birth Of The 6th Grandmaster In Korea

2021/08/27

  • 3,600 teams from all over the world took part in the World Artificial Intelligence Competition and won a gold medal.

  • Yunsu Kim, Upstage Global Residency, won the gold medal and became the 6th Kaggle Grandmaster in Korea

  • UPSTAGE, SPURRING THE DEVELOPMENT OF AI TALENTS WHO ARE STRONG IN PRACTICE THROUGH GLOBAL RESIDENCY

(
Upstage = 2021/08/27) Upstage, an AI-specialized startup, won a gold medal in the world's most famous online artificial intelligence (AI) competition, Kaggle, with 6 million participants from 194 countries, while also winning 6 domestic awards. It was announced on the 27th that the second grandmaster was born.

This World Artificial Intelligence Contest is a 'CommonLit Readability Prize' contest hosted by CommonLit, a non-profit educational technology organization in the United States. The challenge was aimed at building a machine learning algorithm that automatically determines About 3,600 teams participated in this competition, which lasted for about three months from last May, and competed in AI technology, and the upstage team (Leader Kim Sang-hoon, Kim Yun-soo) achieved the feat of winning the gold medal.

Conventional techniques have used a feature that utilizes the number of words constituting a sentence, the number of characters in a word, and part-of-speech information of a language, but this has the disadvantage of not being able to grasp the context of the entire text. Upstage has developed a machine learning algorithm that adds a language model that understands the context of text to existing statistical features, raising its performance to the next level.

In particular, with this gold medal win, Master Yunsu Kim became the youngest and sixth Kaggle grandmaster in Korea. Master Yunsu Kim, an undergraduate student at Seoul National University, is participating in the Upstage Global Residency course, and has accumulated practical skills related to AI technology development while experiencing real-world situations through mentoring by upstage experts. Based on this, it won 5 gold medals in the World Artificial Intelligence Competition and settled at 24th in the Kaggle Global Ranking. In addition, Upstage leader Kim Sang-hoon, who led this tournament, ranked 15th in the Kaggle Global Ranking and became the third Kaggle Grandmaster in Korea in 2020.

UPSTAGE IS STRIVING TO NURTURE WORLD-CLASS AI TALENT THROUGH ITS GLOBAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM. IN ADDITION TO TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES WITH FORMER PAPAGO AND CLOVA DEVELOPMENT LEADERS, YOU CAN ALSO GAIN EXPERIENCE IN KAGGLE COMPETITIONS UNDER SUFFICIENT GPU INFRASTRUCTURE. CURRENTLY, GLOBAL TALENTS WHO WON AI COMPETITIONS HELD IN CHINA AND THE UNITED STATES ARE ACTIVE IN VARIOUS WAYS.

MASTER YUNSU KIM OF UPSTAGE SAID, “AFTER JOINING THE UPSTAGE GLOBAL RESIDENCY, I LEARNED KNOW-HOW ABOUT MACHINE LEARNING MODELING AND OVERALL KAGGLE COMPETITIONS WHILE PARTICIPATING IN THE COMPETITION WITH KAGGLE GRANDMASTER KIM SANG-HOON. AS A RESULT, I WON 5 GOLD MEDALS AND BECAME A GRANDMASTER. “I EXPECT THAT THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING ABLE TO FOCUS ON MODELING USING UPSTAGE’S GPU EQUIPMENT WILL BE OF GREAT HELP TO MY GROWTH AS A MACHINE LEARNING RESEARCH ENGINEER.”

MEANWHILE, UPSTAGE DEVELOPED THE FIRST PUBLIC DATASET 'KLUE' RELATED TO KOREAN NATURAL LANGUAGE UNDERSTANDING EVALUATION TOGETHER WITH EXPERTS FROM INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA RELATED TO KOREAN NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING. IN AUGUST, IT OPENED A CLU LEADERBOARD THAT CAN MEASURE THE PERFORMANCE OF KOREAN AI MODELS, AND IS EXPECTED TO LEAD THE DEVELOPMENT OF KOREAN NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND VITALIZE THE KOREAN AI RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM.
